Suspects of colour
In the Artspace, Floor Kahmann presents a wide selection of paintings inspired by everyday observations, memories, photography and film. Her work exudes stillness and, without an explicit narrative, still evokes a sense of coherence and meaning. The images seem to relate to each other as elements in nature do: natural and connected.Kahmann's paintings depict landscapes, seas, animals and atmospheres - from calm and almost colourless to powerful and tempestuous. Although figurative, they are always poetic in tone, with emotions lurking beneath the surface.
She herself speaks of ‘memory images’: moments that are partly faded, partly sharp in the memory. Some paintings are clear and photographic, others consist of blurred outlines or fragments that show only a glimpse of a reality. How much can you leave out without losing the image?
Her technique is as versatile as her themes. From dry brush strokes on bare linen to rich, wet-on-wet painted layers, she has a complete command of the material. The painting sometimes seems to have a will of its own, continuing to paint itself - right on the border between chance and control.
