EXHIBITIONS
Current exhibitions
At Arti, we present exhibitions on halls, in the society and in the ArtSpace. Check here which exhibitions are currently and in the near future to visit with us.
Exhibition proposals
Our Programme Committee (PC) programmes more than half of all exhibitions at halls. The PC receives exhibition proposals from artists and curators from home and abroad. Submitters and participants do not have to be members of Arti. The PC can also invite someone to curate an exhibition and the PC can initiate projects itself.
The PC works on the basis of a shared vision with the aim of keeping Arti recognisable and relevant in the art world. That vision is constantly evolving and currently has elements representative of Arti such as intergenerational, crossover, laboratory function and international exchange.
We receive many more plans each year than we can honour. Besides quality, urgency and authenticity, the PC looks at the connection between the theme and the chosen works and artists; the way in which the theme is situated in relation to contemporary art/the zeitgeist; the organisational professionalism of the plan and any attention paid to peripheral programming and public outreach. In addition, diversity in a broad sense plays an important role. Arti strives for versatile programming in terms of media, choice of subject matter, artist attitudes, gender, age, origin and context.
Please send a complete exhibition proposal in one pdf file to Arti for the attention of exhibition coordinator Marjo Boeijen, marjo@arti.nl. Applications that do not meet the conditions below cannot be processed. A complete proposal for an exhibition in Arti meets the following conditions:
A proposal should meet the following conditions:
- a clear statement with a concrete selection of artworks / documentation / visual material;
- a clear statement;
- an original vision;
- the choice of participating artists has a clear relationship to the concept.
- the named artists-participants must have agreed to actually participate in the exhibition.
Furthermore, this clarifies the extent to which the design and layout play a role and contribute to a distinct overall image of the exhibition.
- a completed Arti floor plan;
- budget /coverage plan;
- a shadow plan B; this includes an alternative exhibition plan in case no subsidy is granted. The exhibition must be able to go ahead both with and without a grant.
NB: Arti does not accept proposals for solo exhibitions.
We encourage initiatives from curators who want to organise a complementary programme in relation to the exhibition, for example a lecture or debate, a guided tour or a performance.
Once received, the proposal will be reviewed by the PC and adopted and programmed with a majority of positive votes. You will be notified of this as soon as possible. It is not possible to explain the project in person at the PC meeting. Sporadically, the PC may ask for a modified proposal and reconsider the application.
Arti exhibitions in the past
Untold numbers of artists have exhibited at Arti, including Jan Toorop, Isaac Israëls, Martin Monnickendam, George Hendrik Breitner and even Vincent van Gogh and Piet Mondrian. Numerous high-profile exhibitions have taken place, such as the exhibition of the wreckage of Rob Scholte's car after it was struck by a bomb.
A more recent example that should not go unmentioned is the exhibition ‘You will understand that.... Arti et Amicitiae's choices in and after WW2'. In the same rooms as then, the 1947 exhibition ‘In Memoriam’ was translated to the here and now. At the time, the exhibition was intended to pay tribute to the members and former members of the society who had died and been murdered in German and Japanese concentration camps during World War II. Over 75 years later, the reconstruction of this in memoriam exhibition provided opportunities to explore how the association dealt with inclusion and exclusion; how it dealt with its threatened members and the memory of these members; how the association saw and profiled itself; and how it was thought of by others.
Collection management
Arti has an archive of the history of the association and its members. The archive includes annual reports, minutes, loose papers, membership lists and exhibition catalogues. In addition, Arti holds a modest but special art collection of its members with a focus on the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Arti's archive and collection is limited and accessible by appointment only. Please send a request and brief motivation for an appointment to our archivist Celine Oldenhage at celine@arti.nl.
