Arti is the House for Art and Friendship. Arti has both artist and art-loving members. Arti is committed to cultural interests in general and the visual arts in particular. Members can attend the exhibitions and events we organise free of charge and can visit the society in the evenings.
In Arti et Amicitiae, past and present, art, culture and society come together. In 1839, the idea for Arti et Amicitiae originated in the Artis Zoo. Natura Artis Magistra, a private initiative of practitioners of natural sciences, opened a building for its collection of stuffed animals. Everyone who mattered in Amsterdam was invited. This opening gave two visitors, architect Tetar van Elven and engraver Taurel, the idea that artists could also unite.
Together with painters Pieneman and Kruseman and sculptor Royer, they founded Arti et Amicitiae. All were very successful artists at the time and had been appointed as directors at the academy by Willem I. On 3 December 1839, the society was officially founded in coffee house de Karseboom in Kalverstraat. The founders had three goals in mind: promotion of the arts, improvement of social and economic status and fraternisation of artists. ‘Art and friendship’ was the motto with which invited guests could attend that meeting. The association's slogan became ‘equality, frankness and gaiety.’
Committees
Arti has - besides the board - several committees formed by its members: the Assessment Committee, the Programme Committee and the Financial Committee.
Assessment Committee
The Assessment Committee (BC) is responsible for the balloting of artist members and the organisation of the Salon (the annual members' exhibition in December) and Update (the annual exhibition of new members in the spring). The balloting takes into account quality, coherence and development in the work, stance and individuality, integrity and insight into one's own work, place of the work in relation to contemporary art and professionalism (in presentation and CV).

Programme Committee
Our Programme Committee (PC) programmes more than half of all exhibitions in halls. The PC receives exhibition proposals from artists and curators from the Netherlands and abroad. Submitters and participants do not have to be members of Arti. The PC can also invite someone to curate an exhibition and the PC can initiate projects itself.
The PC works on the basis of a common vision with the aim of keeping Arti recognisable and relevant in the art world. That vision is constantly evolving and currently has elements representative of Arti such as intergenerational, crossover, laboratory function and international exchange.

Finance Committee
The Finance Committee (FC) periodically monitors financial reporting, asset management and the way funds are managed. The committee can advise the board and regularly consults directly with the board; however, the board remains free in its policy. At the AGM, the FC reports on its work and findings.
