Freedom Meal
In the Netherlands, we can celebrate living in freedom. But freedom is never something to take for granted. That is why, on Liberation Day, people across the country gather around the table to share stories and celebrate freedom together.
Join us on Tuesday, May 5 at Arti et Amicitiae for a Liberation Lunch in the sociëteit. You are welcome from 12:30 PM for a festive reception with bubbles and piano music, followed by lunch at 1:00 PM. We will enjoy Vrijheidssoep (Freedom Soup).
During the lunch, there will be short contributions, and cellists Annie Tangberg and Emile Visser will provide the music—both midway through the lunch and at the closing—with a focus on Arti and the meaning of freedom.
Annie Tangberg and Emile Visser have been musical companions since their very first day at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague—always “jamming” together and later also colleagues in the Metropole Orchestra. They continue to perform together in various bands and with their own cello quartet, the Metropole Orkest Cellos. In 2022, they performed a cello concerto composed especially for them at the opening of the Cello Biennale.
For the Liberation Lunch, Annie and Emile will present a selection of pieces reflecting on themes of oppression and freedom, including Beirut by Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and Atchafalaya by the band Snarky Puppy.
Following the lunch, the new exhibition in the sociëteit, Onze Handen (“Our Hands”), will open. In this exhibition, hands symbolize connection, resistance, and reconciliation—accompanied by two special soup booklets, available exclusively with the soup.
During the Liberation Lunch, both the exhibition in the sociëteit and the exhibitions in the galleries can be visited freely. We will conclude together at 2:30 PM, after which Arti will reopen as usual.
There is space for 70 guests, so be sure to reserve your place via the link.
