"protest, PROTEST, because it must be done.
Against filthy evil and foolish short‑sightedness.
We know it: our protest is a bow and arrow against a rocket, paint and brush against a tank.
But sometimes arrows and brushes are stronger than injustice.
It must be done, to remain human.
protest, PROTEST, of today and yesterday."

    - Jos Houweling

Farewell to the exhibition PROTEST, protest! (exclusive for members)

As protests continue to echo around the world, we bid farewell to the exhibition Protest, protest!

Serge-Henri Valcke will perform two protest songs and then guide us in a collective exercise: the opening lines of Bella ciao, the global song against injustice.

We sing because we must—loudly and slowly—even if you can’t sing.

    And there will be soup.

The chef considered a flower-bulb soup as a reference to World War II, but in the end it will be potato soup with a booklet.

Once beaten up by the now‑defunct “Karabijnbrigade” in 1960, I’ve been terrified of the police ever since. At demonstrations, when taking photos, I always walk the wrong way. Why have I photographed so many protests and demonstrations? Photography as an excuse. pieterboersmaphotography.com

    Rob Schröder
In the drawer cabinet of the late Rob Schröder lay stacks of posters from the era of Wild Plakken, the collective he founded with Lies Ros and Frank Beekers in the 1980s. Simple and clear protest in primary colours, from a time when the city’s walls were still a social medium.

    Max Kisman
Poster Together Against Fascism. De Correspondent asked Max Kisman to create an image and design a poster for its readers and members. “Protest doesn’t always have to be big,” writes Rosan Smits in her book This Is Fascism. It is important to show that you do not accept the restriction of political freedoms.

    Ramon Jan Vet
Art is a form of resistance/protest. Art asks questions that allow us to see and understand life differently.

    Serge‑Henri Valcke
In this dehumanising world, run by a bunch of mega‑idiots, I must transform my anger and sadness into images — sometimes a bit naïve, a bit childlike, but always with deep, honest indignation.

    Anneke Harmsen
Every protest, no matter how small or unimpressive, has value. Come, join in — we do not agree!

    Femke van Heerikhuizen
In 2021 I signed up for a “Lutkemeer walk”. It was during the pandemic and I had nothing to do. Not a minute after I hit send, I got a call: we see you’re also a draughtswoman. Could you perhaps make an action poster for us? That’s how it started.

    Jules van de Vijver
In the past few years, uncontrollable, violent and furious forces have been unleashed, threatening people, the world as we know it, society, and life on earth itself. Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in ’22, out of shock, I began making prints again.

    Mees de Jong
Protest is necessary because justice is urgent. This “maybe” series protests against certainty and entrenched ideas. Maybe, perhaps, possibly — to be used wherever possible: on the way, at the coffee machine, in the lift, or in the woods.

    Anne Verhoijsen
The genocide in Gaza affects me deeply. I have transformed the burning need to do something into drawing the Palestinian flag every day. This is part of The Necessity: I Must Do Something.

    Jos Houweling
From 24 February 2022 to 24 February one year later, I posted 365 pamphlets on Instagram — indictments against Putin’s filthy war.

    Bas Kosters
I see protesting as a form of love — you take a stand because you care. Protest is also a visual language, a visual aspect you can use to convey a message in your art. Protest aesthetics, to match action with words. Protest and related themes keep returning in my artistic practice.
