This evening focuses on The Power of Our Hands, a documentary about the unique artist community of Tetterode, where living and working have gone hand in hand for 45 years.

Located in Amsterdam Oud-West, Tetterode is a former squat that has grown into one of the city’s largest creative communities. The complex houses artists, makers, social entrepreneurs, and night owls who live and work here with a sense of freedom and autonomy.

What began in the 1980s as a bold experiment in self-governance and guerrilla architecture now finds itself at a crossroads. In a rapidly changing and increasingly commercialized city, the question arises: how much space remains for the original ideals? And how does the older generation pass on the building and its values to a new wave of makers?

The Power of Our Hands portrays a community in transition—vulnerable, resilient, and full of conviction. The film offers an urgent look at the future of affordable living and working spaces for artists in Amsterdam.

After the screening, there will be a conversation with director Onur Can Tepe, initiator and co‑producer Jana Chocholackova, and one of the film’s main subjects, Serge Verheugen.
