Theo de Feyter (1947), artist and archaeologist, traveled through Syria four times during the civil war to paint and draw the devastated cities and blown-up ruins. In 2022, he published Palmyra, Present and Past of a Ruined City. This book is not only a portrayal of the state of Syrian heritage, but also a history of the ruin in European culture through the centuries. In his paintings, De Feyter blends documentation, reportage, and art.
