George Maas - Amster750dam-
On 27 October 2025, Amsterdam will celebrate its 750th anniversary. To mark the celebration, last year George Maas portrayed people with an object that is typically Amsterdam. This could be anything: a street sign, piece of clothing, book, bicycle, flag, photo, artwork or another object that someone had owned for a long time or had made themselves.
It was important that the object had an immediate link to Amsterdam and that the person portrayed felt an emotional connection with it. This resulted in 60 meaningful visual stories about people and their connection to the city.
A selection of the photos will be on display in Arti's Artspace from 31 March to 4 April, daily from 12:00 -17:00 (after 17:00 only for members). Admission is free.
On the origins of Amsterdam:
On 27 October 1275, 'Amestelledamme' was first mentioned in the toll privilege granted by Count Floris V. The granted privilege gave Amsterdammers, who were already acting as merchants at the time, the right to transport their goods through the County of Holland without paying tolls. It is a fact that Amsterdam was in fact granted city rights only in 1300 or 1306 and was thus younger than assumed in 1975.
