Portraits of iconic women - Liesbeth Sevenhuijsen
Liesbeth Sevenhuijsen has composed a group portrait showing 11 famous and significant
women sitting together as if they know each other and have a real connection with each other. It is a
symbolic bond, forged on the canvas.
What unites these women is that each left a mark on history in her own
specific field. They were trailblazers for generations of women who came after them. Aletta
Jacobs as the first woman to be admitted to university and study medicine, Käthe Kollwitz
as a pioneering, committed artist, Ruth Baader Ginsberg who as a member of the U.S.
Supreme Court enshrined the right to abortion, Angela Merkel who for 16 years became the
most powerful woman in Europe.
Also hanging are 24 drawn portraits of other famous women, a personal choice.
They deserve to be honored for their idiosyncratic characters and extraordinary careers.
Guusje ter Horst, feminist and former alderman, mayor, minister and member of the Upper House will open the
exhibition on Monday, september 29, at 5 p.m. in Arti ArtSpace.
