Amsterdam gebouwd op foto’s
It is a feast to be an Amsterdammer, a feast to celebrate! On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the capital, Arti is hosting the exhibition Amsterdam built on photographs. Images from the capital over the past fifty years, from 1975 to 2025. The exhibition is a loving look back through the eyes of 20 photographers and artists who see Amsterdam as property. Not a thousand tulips from Amsterdam but pictures, lots of pictures.
It begins with the 700 Centenboek, published on the occasion of Amsterdam's 700th anniversary, and it ends with the book 700 xxx 750, Amsterdam in series. In between, from Queen's Day to silent protest, from light absurdism to Bijlmer flats, from Dam Square to 750 house numbers, from small happiness to homesickness. Amsterdam in all its facets.
For young people an obligatory integration course, for some older people walking around in it a family album. Your family Amsterdam. Being an Amsterdammer is something to be proud of for 750 years and we celebrate it with this special exhibition.

In 1975, on the occasion of Amsterdam's 700th anniversary, Jos Houweling published the 700 cents book. Half of Amsterdam bought the book for 7 guilders; the other half regretted not buying it. The book consisted of montages of hundreds of black-and-white photographs of everyday details of the city. Houseboats, cargo bikes and handcarts, manhole covers, pepper cans, urinals, climbing frames and whatever else could be seen on the street. Series photography was an unusual form of presentation at the time.
The book paints a wonderful period picture of the 1970s. The original photographs are in the collection of Centre Pompidou in Paris. This prestigious art center saw the 700-cent book as a conceptual work of art, a portrait of a city without hierarchy.
It is 50 years later, 2025. Series are no longer made with scissors and glue, but digitally. From black and white to color. Series photography has become an accepted art form, with, for example, a weekly column in Het Parool. An image of time does not stand still, just as Amsterdam changes day by day, year by year.
2025. On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam and as a tribute to the 700 centenary book, Arnold Weel and Moniek Spaans who regularly publish series in the Collections section of Het Parool, and extra, out of enthusiasm, Henri van Poll, Maze de Boer, Cor Houweling, Jochem Houweling, Anne Verhoijsen and Katja van Stiphout have realized this book. Pages from the 700 cents book were embraced and other series were put next to it. A total of 75 responses to the 700-cent book. It has become a reflection of changes, new in the streetscape. The progress in the small, that you experience thanks to this book. Cherish this book, yes, cherish this book.
