Amsterdam, a city rich in history, has undergone several metamorphoses over the centuries undergone. From a modest artisan city in the 15th century to a powerful trading center in the 17th century, and from a financial center in the 18th century to an industrial city at the end of the 19th century. These transformations are the result not only of economic change, but also of social engagement and innovative thinkers such as Samuel Sarphati.
In this fascinating lecture, Adjan van Dongen examines the fascinating role of Samuel Sarphati, who breathed new life into the city in the 19th century. Around 1840, Amsterdam was in a crisis of poverty and stagnation. Sarphati, a visionary with unprecedented energy, introduced several initiatives that restored vitality and social cohesion to the city. His efforts marked the beginning of what historians call Amsterdam's Second Golden Age (1860-1930). During this period, Amsterdam was rebuilt as an entrepreneurial, innovative center, but with room for social engagement.
Adjan van Dongen is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable speaker with a deep-rooted love for Amsterdam. Born and raised in the city, he shares his knowledge and passion about the history and innovation of Amsterdam with his audience. With his background in history and innovation he knows how to make his stories inspiring and engaging.
