Alexandra Drenth - Paradijstuinen: Unica in Naald en Draad
A paradise garden is often envisioned as a heavenly place of peace and abundance, a perfect harmony between nature and the soul. In such gardens, nature flows effortlessly with a sense of timelessness, mysticism, and tranquility. The paradise garden breathes a serene, almost magical atmosphere. Remarkably, in this imperfect world, people continue to long for this paradise—a state of perfection and harmony that seems to have been lost. We instinctively feel that something better is possible, a world in which suffering and conflict are absent. This longing can be seen as a memory of a condition that we recognize deep within, yet seem unable to reach.
The exhibition reveals what happens when we surrender to prolonged, repetitive, and detailed work. Through handcrafted textile work, this exhibition showcases the process of slow, deliberate labor, which transforms not only the final product but also the maker. In an era where technology and speed are central, this approach offers a moment of contemplation. It invites reflection on the value of rearranging, reusing, and reassembling, aiming to develop a renewed approach and vision.
Alexandra will be present daily during the exhibition from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, working on her embroidery.
At the opening, Digna Poelman, a trainer/coach and visual artist, will speak with Alexandra about her work. Flautist Fetsje Bijma will provide musical accompaniment. Since 2007, Fetsje has been one of the regular flutists of the VU Chamber Orchestra and also performs in various project orchestras and chamber music ensembles.
