Communicatie vindt voortdurend en op vele manieren plaats via allerlei soorten tekensystemen. Gecodeerde tekens zoals letters, cijfers en symbolen zijn dragers en beelden / uitdrukkingen van informatie. In aansluiting op het onderwerp van de tentoonstelling verwijst de titel naar het concept van ‘de/cipher’, waarin de raadselachtige, mysterieuze, zelfs onbegrepen versleutelde informatie doorklinkt voorbij de codering.

Deze tentoonstelling verkent het concept van ‘cipher’ door werken van kunstenaars die werken met de visuele en auditieve aspecten van taal en haar semiotiek/semiotische eigenschappen. In combinatie met een levendige randprogrammering met performances, séances en lezingen, wordt het begrip cipher van alle kanten belicht. De tentoonstelling zal werken tonen van kunstenaars van zeer uiteenlopende generaties die nog niet eerder in Amsterdam, en/of Nederland te zien zijn geweest. Onlangs is ‘de/cipher’ in gkg (Gesellschaft für Kunst und Gestaltung) Bonn te zien geweest en werd geconcipieerd door curator Susannah Cremer Bermbach.

Daarnaast komt het akoestische aspect van taal aan de orde met performances van Jane Brucker / Jeremy Wasser (USA) - Unravel Project, met trui en zang, Paul Goede (NL) – ‘Mental Séances’, en Timo Berndt (DE) - lezing over geluidsgedichten van Kurt Schwitters tot John Cage.

EN de/cipher On the semiotic interplay of ciphering and deciphering and their translation into lines, shapes, colors, patterns, signs, symbols.

Communication takes place constantly and in many ways via sign systems of all kinds. Coded signs like letters, numbers, symbols represent and convey information. In accordance with the focus of the exhibition, the title refers to the concept of the cipher, in which the enigmatic, mysterious, even misunderstood encrypted information resonates beyond the coding.

This exhibition explores the concept of the cipher through works by artists who laborate with the visual and auditory aspects of language and the process of translation. Combined with a lively side programming with performances, séances and lectures, the concept of cipher will be highlighted from all sides. The exhibition will feature works by artists of very different generations that have not previously been shown in Amsterdam, and/or the Netherlands. Recently, de/cipher has been on view at gkg (Gesellschaft für Kunst und Gestaltung) in Bonn and was conceived there by curator Susannah Cremer Bermbach.

In addition, the acoustic aspect of language will be featured with performances by Jane Brucker / Jeremy Wasser (USA) - Unravel Project; with sweater and vocals, Paul Goede (NL) - Mental Séances, and Timo Berndt (D) –reading performance on sound poems from Kurt Schwitters to John Cage.
