Biografie Reineke Hollander is a Dutch-American artist, who grew up in the Netherlands but has lived in New York City since 1986. Since 2015 she works for six months a year in Marseille, France. A brief career as a theatrical costume designer provided the genesis of her love for fabrics and sewing.
In her mixed-media series she uses next to paint (acrylic or oil) ‘lost and found’ objects and vintage textiles and paper, to rescue their stories and re-animate them in new contexts. Traveling to ‘other places’ is another source of her inspiration. She has thus attended residencies or established studios for lengthy periods in far-flung locations, including Tanzania, Israel, Poland, New Mexico and most recently Marseille. Every one of her works is formed by a hybrid of all these places: their political, historical, cultural and emotional vibes that flow into her studio where they are coupled with material, often found locally.
